In our first IPQ Debate, we will further explore a key theme from our Winter 2024 issue: Europe’s lack of a geostrategy.

In 2019, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called hers the EU’s first “geopolitical commission.” Since then, the EU has indeed started to act and think more geopolitically, especially in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Now, however, it urgently needs a strategy to live up to its geopolitical aspirations and strengthen Europe’s security. Our speakers suggest ways forward at this crucial junction for Europe.

Thursday, February 8, 12.30-1.30 PM (CET), via Zoom

Speakers:

Romana Vlahutin, Visiting Distinguished Fellow for Geostrategy, German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF); Former EU Special Envoy for Connectivity (2019 to 2022)
James Rogers, Co-founder and Director of Research, Council on Geostrategy

Chair: Henning Hoff, Executive Editor, Internationale Politik Quarterly (IPQ)
